October is Dyslexia Awareness Month! As part of the Iowa Reading Research Center’s mission to spread awareness about language-based learning disabilities, we have compiled a short list of resources and activities centered around dyslexia. For more information on dyslexia and the resources available at the IRRC, visit our webpage with dyslexia resources.
IRRC’s Dyslexia eLearning Module
The IRRC has created a Dyslexia Overview eLearning Module to provide educators and caregivers an overview of this reading disability. In addition to leaving participants better informed, the knowledge gained may also help caregivers advocate for their children in school. Registration for this eLearning module is free for all Iowa residents and $10 for all others.
Dyslexia Reading Recommendations
Last year, IRRC student employees Natalie Schloss and Grace Cacini compiled a list of books written by and about individuals with dyslexia. This article features both informative and fun reading recommendations. There’s a book for everyone—caregivers, educators, and children.
Decoding Dyslexia Resource Packet
As described by the International Dyslexia Association (IDA), “Decoding Dyslexia is a network of parent-led grassroots movements across the country [that] aims to raise dyslexia awareness, empower families to support their children and inform policymakers on best practices to identify, remediate and support students with dyslexia.” The Iowa chapter of Decoding Dyslexia has created a packet of informational resources about dyslexia, including signs and symptoms, myths and facts, tips for teachers, and handouts for starting and continuing important conversations about dyslexia.
Success Stories
The Yale Center for Dyslexia and Creativity has compiled success stories from individuals with dyslexia who have become leaders in their field. These inspiring stories are categorized by profession, including sections for artists, doctors, explorers, sports personalities, and more.
